How the core mechanism works

The Model Y uses a simple but very precise sequence:

• Feed rollers pull the stuffed casing forward

The stuffer pushes product into the casing, and the linker’s rollers grip the rope and advance it at a controlled rate. The rollers are timed by a gear train so the feed is smooth and consistent.

• A mechanical measuring system determines link length

Inside the machine is a set of white nylon gears and cams (visible in several images) that rotate in a fixed ratio. Each rotation corresponds to a specific length of sausage being fed. This is how the machine ensures every link is the same size.

• The twisting head rotates the casing at the exact moment

When the measuring gears reach their “trip point,” the twisting mechanism engages. It grabs the casing and spins it rapidly, creating the twist between links. This is the signature Famco design—simple, reliable, and extremely consistent.

• The process repeats continuously

As long as the stuffer feeds product, the linker will:

feed → measure → twist → feed → measure → twist, producing a chain of perfectly spaced links.

What makes the Model Y special

• Fully mechanical — no electronics to fail; everything is driven by gears, cams, and a motor.

• Extremely consistent — Famco has been the industry standard since 1929 for uniform link length.

• High speed — ideal for collagen‑casing pork sausage lines.

• Durable — stainless steel versions are common, and many machines from the 1960s–1980s are still running today.

What operators typically adjust

• Link length (via gear changes or cam adjustments)

• Twist tightness

• Feed roller pressure

• Chain lubrication (Famco labels emphasize greasing the chain twice weekly)

A simple way to visualize it

Think of it like a bicycle drivetrain connected to a twisting spindle:

• The “pedals” (motor) turn the “chain” (drive chain).

• The chain turns a set of gears that control feed rate and timing.

• At a precise moment, another gear triggers the twisting head.

• Everything stays perfectly synchronized because it’s all mechanical.

A Famco Model Y Linker is a mechanical, gear‑driven sausage‑linking machine designed to take a continuous rope of stuffed sausage and convert it into uniform, twisted links at high speed. It’s entirely mechanical—no electronics—and relies on synchronized gears, rollers, and a twisting head to create consistent link lengths.
